Profile & Role

Program purpose

The purpose of the SSAB business development program is to define, develop and drive the implementation of SSAB’s business strategy. This is done by engaging with the line organization in prioritized growth and market-, operational- as well as organizational and M&A development initiatives.

The program is also a talent development program where externally, or internally, recruited young professionals spend 2-3 years to develop their problem solving skills, leadership skills, and knowledge about SSAB to build a solid platform for a future successful career with SSAB after the program.

Program description and tasks

The program is constructed on a “learning by doing” approach. The objective is to spend 2-8 months on a strategically important project, and then move on to another area. This gives the participants an ability to achieve real impact, but also to develop a broad functional and organizational understanding of the company.

As a business development manager you would have the following tasks

1.     Conduct, with the responsible line manager, business development projects to achieve set goals. This entails hands on leadership and analytical work throughout the projects phases – mobilization, analysis, recommendations, and implementation. Projects can be done for Corporate, Divisions, Functions or one SSAB’s fully owned subsidiaries.

2.     Assist in SSAB strategy formulation and follow up – for instance by taking the lead on a sub stream of the strategy work such as market and industry analysis, financial modelling, benchmarking, and/or strategy targets follow-up.

3.     Produce top management and board level communication material relating for instance to the status of the company, industry dynamics, events and or world economy developments.

The participants are based at the SSAB Headquarter office in Stockholm and reports to the Vice President of Strategy and Business Development, Viktor Strömberg. The work in projects is often performed outside the office, and the applicants must be willing to travel and/or relocate for period of time.

Ideal qualities

A new candidate should ideally have strengths, or the evidence for a developing strengths, in the following areas.

1. Intellectual capacity. Strong analytical capabilities with ability to structure and manage complex situations and problems.

2. Practical mindset. Need to be able to translate analytical results to concrete recommendations, and visions to actionable plans. Communicate effectively to build understanding and alignment on complex matters.

3. Effective personal style. Very good ability to cooperate with all levels in the organization to drive change, i.e., with senior and middle managers, while collar colleagues, and blue collar colleagues across the globe.

4. Own drive for impact. Need to show a clear drive and persistency to get things started and going. Need to be a self-starter without need for continuous supervision.

5.  Interest: Need to possess a genuine interest the steel industry, in SSAB, and in developing a career with SSAB longer term. 

Qualifications and experience

  • Master of Science in Engineering, Finance & Business Administration or equivalent
  • 3-6 years of successful work experience – Consulting, Financial sector or relevant Industry
  • Good knowledge about a relevant functional area is merited – e.g. M&A, Marketing, Operations, Supply Chain. 
  • Willingness to consider an operative role following the program at another location (mill location, or sales company abroad) is highly merited
  • Project management experience within the industrial sector is merited
  • Very good English needed, Finnish and/or Swedish is an additional merit
